Taiwan, a small Island surrounded by the Pacific Ocean with a subtropical climate, is warm and wet compared to other East Asia countries. Rains are in every season and the air humidity is above average- typical rainy season in the spring, typhoons in the summer and cold air mass with water vapor in the winter. The high humidity makes mold spots common to see on the wall or shoes in Taiwan. Living under this type of weather, knowledge of dehumidifying is important. It is common to see that local families put dehumidifier bags or boxes in the closet- some of them even have nice fragrance.
Here are some additional ideas to reduce indoor humidity and make the house comfortable to live in.
Mop the Floor with Salt Water
Salt is good at taking the moisture away faster, and the warm water with temperature 30°C - 40°C degree can sterilize effectively. Adding some salt to the warm water when you mop the floor makes the floor dry quickly.
Newspaper and Coffee Grounds
Reading the newspaper and having a cup of coffee is more than just a good way to start your day. Do you know they are also perfect tools for dehumidifying? Putting newspaper rolls in the cabinet can help reduce humidity. Leaving a packet of coffee grounds in the cupboard not only keeps the good smell but also prevents the cupboard from water damage. Next time when you finish your lovely morning time, don’t throw away the two magical things just yet.
Natural Desiccant
Both tea leaves and citrus peels are natural and organic desiccants. They can absorb moisture from the air to achieve a drying effect. Dry the tea leaves or citrus peels in the sun, then pack them in small bags and place them in the corner of the wardrobe or in the shoes. These small bags can have a certain moisture-proof effect and keep a fresh aroma.
Dry Clothes Immediately
Hanging clothes in vaulted shape helps clothes dry faster because the space in the middle of the vault allows air to pass more easily and thus moisture evaporates faster. Drying your clothes as soon as possible can help prevent the musty smell.
Besides these tips, the most important thing is to be diligent, clean regularly, and keep the house dry and tidy.
